No trial, no paywall, no "commercial" edition, no license keys. Everything on this site is free forever, for everyone.

Your rights

  • Use it freely — for personal, internal, or commercial purposes, with no limits or fees.
  • Study it — the full source code is public, so anyone can audit how PDFBay handles files.
  • Modify it — change any part of the code to fit your own needs.
  • Redistribute it — share your own version with others.

Your obligations

  • Keep it open — modified versions you distribute or provide over a network must be licensed under AGPL-3.0.
  • Share your source — users of your modified version must be able to obtain its complete corresponding source code.
  • Preserve attribution — keep the license text and copyright notices, including BentoPDF's original notice.

Attribution

PDFBay is a fork of BentoPDF by its original authors (alam00000 and contributors), which is distributed under the AGPL-3.0 license. Its copyright notice is preserved in this project's LICENSE file. BentoPDF's upstream repository, its own licensing terms, and any commercial licensing offered by its authors are entirely separate from PDFBay.

PDFBay runs in your browser and bundles or loads third-party components with their own licenses, including PDF.js (Apache-2.0), qpdf (Apache-2.0), LibreOffice WASM (MPL-2.0), Tesseract (Apache-2.0), pdf-lib (MIT), and the AGPL-licensed WASM processing modules (PyMuPDF, Ghostscript, Coherent PDF) — see the Advanced Settings license notice for details.

Licensing FAQ

Is PDFBay really free?

Yes. Every tool on this site is free to use without registration, and the software itself is free under AGPL-3.0. There is no paid tier and nothing to buy.

Can I use PDFBay commercially?

Yes. AGPL-3.0 software may be used for commercial purposes. If you distribute a modified version or offer it to users over a network, you must make your modified source code available under AGPL-3.0.

Can I use PDFBay in a closed-source product?

Only if your use does not require distributing or network-serving a modified version to others. The AGPL obligations apply to modifications of this code, not to documents you create with the tools. If you need a proprietary license, contact the original BentoPDF authors — PDFBay itself does not sell licenses.

Why does PDFBay credit BentoPDF?

Because PDFBay is built on BentoPDF, an open-source project also released under AGPL-3.0. AGPL-3.0 requires that we keep the original copyright notice and license, and that we make our source code available — both are satisfied here.

Where can I get the source code?

The complete source is on GitHub, including this license file and the original upstream notice.
